What are the similarities and differences between the marriage of figaro the play and the opera?

the biggest difference is in the text. Beaumarchais' play was condiered far too revolutionary and was censored in Austria under Empress Maria Theresa.

Mozart's opera was only allowed to be performed if he toned down, or censored out the really hairy bits.

We modern folks, reading the libretto of the opera are surprised to find it so mild, but if you look back to the original, there was really a lot of stuff that went over the top ( for that time)

So, we're left with bits that anyone would understand.: implied infidelity ( Count getting it on with anyone) MILF (Countess being attracted to Cherubino)jeallousy ( poor Figaro) more MILF ( Marcellina wanting Figaro for herself, before she finds out he's her son) extramarital sex ( Bartolo's the dad, and they weren't married at the time). Gee, we're left with the sexy bits. they are dnagerous at all. they sold, even back then!

Enjoy the original, it's got a lot more depth.
